The 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, hosted the fifteenth official Olympic basketball tournaments. Both the men's and women's competitions ran from 16 September to 1 October, with games played at the Sydney SuperDome and The Dome. The United States swept the gold medals in both events.
Each National Olympic Committee could enter one men's and one women's team of 12 players. Automatic qualification went to the reigning world champions, the host nation, and the winners of the five continental championships. In the men's tournament, the Americas runner-up and four additional European teams also qualified. For the women's tournament, the second- and third-place teams from the Americas plus three more European squads earned berths.
The tournament format split twelve teams into two preliminary groups of six. The top four from each group advanced to the knockout stage. The fifth-placed teams played for 9th place, and the sixth-placed teams for 11th place. Quarterfinal matchups paired A1 vs. B4, A2 vs. B3, A3 vs. B2, and A4 vs. B1. Losers of the A1/B4 and A2/B3 quarterfinals competed for 5th place, while the other two losers played for 6th place. Semifinals matched the A1/B4 winner against the A3/B2 winner, and the A2/B3 winner against the A4/B1 winner. The semifinal winners played for the gold medal; the losers played for bronze. Tie-breaking criteria were head-to-head results, then goal average between tied teams, then goal average against all group teams.
